Property Description

The first home built in Clay County. Built in 1852, six years before West Point, MS was incorporated (1858), the OldBrame House started as a two-room, segregated cottage located inwestern-most part of Lowndes County. The cottage was a temporary residencefor both George Brame, owner, and the builders of Elmview Mansion. AfterElmview Mansion was complete, the cottage became a building on ElmviewPlantation.According to the National Historic Register and historian Joan Embree, the OldBrame House is believed to be the oldest home in West Point-built the sameyear that Waverly Mansion and the Moss-Jones House were completed and ayear before Elmview Mansion was completed. The first recorded mention of the Old Brame House..... .... found in the West Point, MSLibrary archives was from a newspaper article titled, A Walk Down SouthDivision Street -1888.From its humble beginnings as a two-room cottage with a cookhouse and a privy(outhouse) the house has seen many alterations and owners. The first time itwas deeded as a residence in West Point was 1911 when it was purchased byLucy Westbrook Brame, widow of George Brame, from the estate of S.L. Hearn. She bought back the property 23 years after she sold the entire plantation. Its first appearance on the Sanborn maps was 1918 after the city limit of WestPoint was expanded to include the house. At that time, the cookhouse and privywere gone, and a kitchen, bathroom, and small back porch were added onto thehome. There was a single car garage built on the north-east corner at the back ofthe house. A wrap porch replaced the original small, brick porch. The originalbrick porch remains-and the top is still visible after the wrap porch deck wasreplaced.Through its 172-year history, the interior of the house has been renovated manytimes. In the 1970's it was divided into a 4-bedroom boarding house with a smallkitchen where the back porch had been, and the fireplace had been removed.Today, it has lovingly been restored to its early 20th century layout and designwith convenient modernization and structural reinforcements added. The kitchennow features both a large pantry and laundry closet. When layers of modernflooring were removed, the location of the fireplace was revealed, as well as theoriginal heart pine floors from 1852. Today, a new fireplace stands where theoriginal had been and the original floors have been preserved. Her simple lines, high ceilings, and spacious rooms provide an open palette for any design orstyle. The Old Brame House is truly a piece of history whose robust structural designhas stood the test of time. Today, she is fully up to code with new electricitythroughout, new Pex/PVC plumbing all the way to the street, and structuralrehabilitation and enhancement. The addition of energy-efficient, noise-reducingindoor storm windows keeps energy costs low and makes for a very comfortableenvironment. The Old Brame House is your chance to own a charming piece of history.
